Daytona State to host abilities-awareness event, Oct. 22

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Oct. 13, 2014) - The 24th annual Abilities Awareness Day at Daytona State College will be held on Wednesday, Oct.22, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. This event brings together
non-disabled and people with disabilities to share fun, information, education and understanding. The event helps promote and build an integrated community by assisting people with different abilities to learn together and access resources that Daytona State and Volusia County have to offer.

The celebration features:

  • performances by the OuttaSight Band and Deaf Dance Troupe from the Florida School for the Deaf and Blind
  • games and a wheelchair rally held by the college’s Occupational Therapy students
  • informational tables about regional support services

All activities are in the main courtyard of the Daytona Beach Campus, 1200 W. International Speedway Blvd.

Organized by the college’s Office of Student Disabilities Services and sponsored by the Co-Curricular Activities Department, the event is free and open to the public.

(Caption) Through demonstrations and simulations, non-disabled participants can experience barriers faced by people living with disabilities.
