DSC’s L. Gale Lemerand Speaker Series to feature renowned author, businessman

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (March 26, 2015) – Jim Stovall, who overcame blindness to become a champion athlete, television executive and best-selling author, will be the featured speaker on Tuesday, April 7, during the L. Gale Lemerand Entrepreneurial Speaker Series hosted by the Small
Business Development Center at Daytona State College.

The event, free and open to the public, takes place from 6:30 to 7:45 p.m. in the Hosseini Center on the college’s Daytona Beach Campus, 1200 W. International Speedway Blvd., and will be highlighted by three scholarship awards.

Forbes magazine has called Stovall, “One of the most extraordinary men of our era.” Having lost his sight at an early age, he rose above his life’s challenges to become a champion Olympic weightlifter, president of the Emmy Award-winning Narrative Television Network, a successful investment broker, best-selling author and motivational speaker.

For his work in making television accessible to America’s 13 million blind and visually impaired people, the President’s Committee on Equal Opportunity in 1997 named Stovall its Entrepreneur of the Year. In 2000, the Lions Club named him International Humanitarian of the Year, joining Jimmy Carter, Nancy Reagan and Mother Teresa as recipients of this honor. Stovall also received the 2001 Toastmaster's International Communication and Leadership Award.

Stovall has authored 30 books, four of which have been made into major motion pictures, including the best-selling “The Ultimate Gift,” which starred James Garner and Abigail Breslin.

Three scholarships will be awarded during the event: one for a student enrolled in a Flagler/Volusia high school who plans to attend DSC; one for a student enrolled in a DSC two-year business program; and one for a student enrolled in a DSC four-year business program.

Scholarship applications are available at www.DaytonaState.edu/entrepreneur and must be submitted to Entrepreneurs@Daytonastate.edu by 5 p.m. on March 30.
