Once on This Island reminiscent of The Little Mermaid fable
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (May 29, 2014) – Appropriate and entertaining for the whole family, the highly original Once on This Island follows a similar storyline as the popular fairy tale, The Little Mermaid. Daytona State College presents Once on This Island with a nine-performance run starting Friday, June 6, at 2:30 p.m. at the college’s News-Journal Center.
With almost non-stop song and dance, the play tells the story of Ti Moune, a peasant girl who rescues and falls in love with Daniel, a wealthy boy from the other side of her island. After Daniel is returned to his people, the fantastical gods who rule the island guide Ti Moune on a quest to test the strength of her love against the powerful forces of prejudice and hatred.
Featuring performances from students and community players, the musical is directed by Samantha Stern, assistant professor, Mike Curb College of Music, Entertainment and Art.
Evening performances in the Gillespy Theater at the college’s News-Journal Center at 221 N. Beach St., Daytona Beach, are scheduled for June 6, 7, 12, 13 and 14 at 7:30 p.m. with matinee performances continuing June 8, 13 and 15 at 2:30 p.m.
Admission is free to Daytona State and Volusia and Flagler county students and Daytona State employees; all others $8 per person or $15 for two. Tickets are available at the News-Journal Center Box Office, Wednesday-Friday, 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., or online at www.DaytonaState.edu/TheArts.

The performing arts programs at Daytona State prepare students for futures in music, drama and dance, while also providing entertainment opportunities for the community through a variety of events produced each semester.
