This week at DSC; new exhibits at Southeast Museum of Photography, "Once on This Island" continues June 12-15

Appropriate and entertaining for the whole family, the highly original Once on This Island continues this week: June 12, 13, 14 and 15 at the college's News-Journal Center.

Two new exhibits open this week at the Southeast Museum of Photography - "Of One and the Other," and "Obsessions, Curiosities, and Fancies" - opening reception is slated for Wednesday, June 11 from 6 to 8 p.m.

Daytona State announces 16-hour training for certified pool operation

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (May 30, 2014) - The Center for Business & Industry at Daytona State College announces a 16-hour course to become a certified pool operator. Established by the National Swimming Pool Foundation, the CPO course is designed to provide the knowledge necessary to safely and efficiently manage and operate swimming pools and spas.

Taught by a 15-year veteran of the pool and spa industry, this course will be held Tuesday, June 10, Wednesday, June 11, and Thursday, June 12, from 5 to 9 p.m. and concludes on Saturday, June 14 from 8 a.m. to noon. Cost is $295 and includes textbooks.

Topics covered during the course include: Water Chemistry; Filtration - Circulation; Maintenance; Operations and Safety; Calculations; Spa/Hot Tub; and Health Code.

Volusia County Health Department Public Swimming Pool and Bathing Places (code 64E-9.018) states:Any individual who services a public pool by maintaining the cleanliness, water quality and chemical balance of a public pool shall be certified. To ensure the pool technician is knowledgeable, said technician shall attend a training course of national recognition that is approved by the department.” Upon completion of this course, the student must demonstrate knowledge of the topics covered in the Certified Pool Operators course, by successfully answering 75 percent of the questions on the National Swimming Pool Foundation written Certified Pool Operators certification exam.

The instructor for this course is Richard Drolshagen, owner of Perfect Pools, a nationally accredited, fully licensed and insured company that has been in the pool service business for more than 15 years. Drolshagen is an active member in the National Swimming Pool Foundation, Port Orange Chamber of Commerce and Association of Pool & Spa Professionals, and currently holds certifications as a certified pool operator, instructor and inspector.

Daytona State’s summer musical shares test of love against forces of prejudice

Once on This Island reminiscent of The Little Mermaid fable
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (May 29, 2014) – Appropriate and entertaining for the whole family, the highly original Once on This Island follows a similar storyline as the popular fairy tale, The Little Mermaid. Daytona State College presents Once on This Island with a nine-performance run starting Friday, June 6, at 2:30 p.m. at the college’s News-Journal Center.

With almost non-stop song and dance, the play tells the story of Ti Moune, a peasant girl who rescues and falls in love with Daniel, a wealthy boy from the other side of her island. After Daniel is returned to his people, the fantastical gods who rule the island guide Ti Moune on a quest to test the strength of her love against the powerful forces of prejudice and hatred.

Featuring performances from students and community players, the musical is directed by Samantha Stern, assistant professor, Mike Curb College of Music, Entertainment and Art.

Evening performances in the Gillespy Theater at the college’s News-Journal Center at 221 N. Beach St., Daytona Beach, are scheduled for June 6, 7, 12, 13 and 14 at 7:30 p.m. with matinee performances continuing June 8, 13 and 15 at 2:30 p.m.

Admission is free to Daytona State and Volusia and Flagler county students and Daytona State employees; all others $8 per person or $15 for two. Tickets are available at the News-Journal Center Box Office, Wednesday-Friday, 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., or online at www.DaytonaState.edu/TheArts.

The performing arts programs at Daytona State prepare students for futures in music, drama and dance, while also providing entertainment opportunities for the community through a variety of events produced each semester. This week at DSC; Enrollment Day events and "Once on This Island" performances start June 6

Registration for summer and fall semesters is as simple as a visit to either the Daytona Beach, DeLand or Deltona campus. Students can attend an Enrollment Day event to complete everything from admission to registration and have a chance at winning a $350 scholarship.
