Center for Business & Industry offerings match workforce interests

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Oct. 13, 2014) – The Center for Business & Industry (CBI) at Daytona State College addresses timely training needs of a broad spectrum of employers and professionals; its November offerings provide functional learning in subjects ranging from leadership to pool operations, pumps and Microsoft Office products.

  • Pumpology School: On Nov. 6, in partnership with Thompson Pump, CBI presents a one-day workshop, “Pumpology School,” that combines six courses approved by the Florida Board of Professional Engineers (FBPE), the Construction Industry Licensing Board (CILB) and the Florida Rural Water Association (FRWA). This workshop provides hands-on demonstrations and classroom training from recognized industry experts. Topics include the measurement of sound for pumps, calculating system head curve, determining friction loss, various curve reading methods, differences of variable and positive displacement pumps, backup pumps for lift stations, eight steps for proper pump failure analysis and more. Tuition: $200 (FRWA CEU Administrative Fee $35 for members, $65 for non-members. Must be paid in advance along with tuition). The workshop meets on the college’s Daytona Beach Campus, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Emerging Leadership Series: Bringing more than 20 years of leadership, management,  training and development experience, Mark Toombs will guide participants in the Emerging Leadership Series beginning Nov. 11. The series covers several key business skills and how to apply them within an organizational context. Effective leadership, better decision making, talent development, coaching, change management and strategy formulation form the core of the program's curriculum. Using in-depth discussions, skills practice and case studies, each half-day module teaches skills to maximize both individual and team performance. Cost: $595 for the series (includes all student materials and refreshment breaks). The series meets on the college’s Daytona Beach Campus, Nov. 11, 18, 25 and Dec. 5, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Certified Pool Operator Training Course: With a convenient mid-week evening and weekend schedule, the Certified Pool Operator Training Course was established by the National Swimming Pool Foundation (NSPF) to teach how to safely and efficiently manage and operate swimming pools and spas. Upon course completion, participants must demonstrate knowledge of the topics covered by successfully answering 75 percent of the questions on the NSPF CPO-certification exam. The course fee is $295 including text book. Classes are held on the college’s Daytona Beach Campus and start on Tuesday, Nov. 18, from 5 to 9 p.m., continuing Wednesday, Nov. 19, and Thursday, Nov. 20.
