DSC partners with NFCAA to help students get on right track

PALM COAST, Fla. (July 23, 2015) - A group of 20 Flagler County high school juniors and seniors
has been preparing for the future this summer as part of the Northeast Florida Community Action Agency’s (NFCAA) Data Busters Summer Camp Program hosted by Daytona State College’s Flagler/Palm Coast Campus.

The group will graduate from the six-week program during a 2 p.m. ceremony on Monday, July 27, in the Flagler County Government Services Building, 3rd floor, 1769 E. Moody Blvd. in Bunnell.

“Daytona State College, through its Center for Business & Industry, is proud to partner with NFCAA to bring this program to our area for the third consecutive year,” said Kent Ryan, provost of DSC’s Flagler campus. “These students are at a critical juncture in their lives, and the Data Busters program provides them a great foundation to envision their goals and begin developing the life skills they will need to achieve them.”

Now in its 29th year, Data Busters is NFCAA’s signature summer youth program. It helps teens ages 14-17 develop life skills that will prepare them for the workplace and beyond. For the past six weeks, the students have been learning computer skills, touring various worksites and getting paid on-the-job training at area non-profit groups and government agencies. They also receive classroom instruction at DSC on topics such as conflict resolution, effective communication, team building, resume writing, money management, critical thinking, nutrition and more.

Krissy Leonard, a senior professor with DSC’s School of Student Life Skills, said the students have been enthusiastic throughout the experience. “They have really taken advantage of each component of the program,” she said. “I try to prepare them for the world of academia and the world of work. In addition to the computer skills training, they are planning for college, and exploring careers, job outlooks and salaries so they can set realistic goals.”

The work experience with area non-profit groups the students receive helps them apply what they learn in the classroom. “When they leave the program,” Leonard said, “they will have a resume, a cover letter and a list of references based on this work experience.”

Daytona State invites local musicians to join community band, orchestra or jazz ensemble

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. The Daytona State College Community Symphonic Band, developed in the spirit of the old John Philip Sousa Bands, performs traditional and modern classics as well as marches, Broadway hits and movie selections. The band welcomes community members who can read music and play a woodwind, brass or percussion instrument to join as members of an outstanding 65-piece concert ensemble. The 28th season of the band will commence with an open rehearsal, including new and returning members, on Monday, Aug. 24, at 7 p.m. on the Davidson Theater stage at the college’s News-Journal Center, 221 N. Beach St., Daytona Beach. Rehearsals are held every Monday from 7 to 9:50 p.m.

Under the baton of Dr. Norton Christeson, senior professor, the Daytona State College Symphony Orchestra is comprised of string, wind and percussion players from the greater Volusia County area, some coming from as far away as Altamonte Springs and Palm Coast. It functions as the only full-sized community symphony orchestra in the area and presents three major concerts per season. The orchestra will hold its first rehearsal of the season on Tuesday, Sept. 1, at 7 p.m. at the News-Journal Center. Regular Tuesday night rehearsals continue in preparation for the fall concert.

Rehearsals begin for another season on Wednesday, Aug. 26, from 7 to 9:50 p.m. at the News-Journal Center. The jazz ensemble focuses on contemporary compositions and arrangements for the big band format and provides a challenging and enriching experience for the student, amateur and professional alike. The group is open to all who can read music. There are typically two to three performances per semester and some may be off campus at various local venues. Regular weekly rehearsals are scheduled throughout the year on Wednesday evenings.

For more information, contact Waidelich, (386) 506-4690 or WaidelP@DaytonaState.edu.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (July 17, 2015) – Heads up to anyone interested in a fast track to a manufacturing career: Information sessions for the Florida TRADE Manufacturing Program will run Monday, Aug. 3, and Thursday, Aug. 6, at 5:30 p.m. presented by the College of Workforce and Continuing Education at Daytona State College.

The Florida TRADE Manufacturing program can open doors to a career in manufacturing through a 12-week course that starts Sept. 14. The course develops an initial set of technical skills that can lead to certifications, internships and job interviews with partnering manufacturing companies such as AO Precision, Medtronics (formerly Covidien), Thomas & Betts, and Hudson Technologies.

The information sessions will be held in room 137 at DSC’s Advanced Technology College, 1770 Technology Blvd. (off Williamson, approximately one mile from the intersection of LPGA/Williamson).

In September 2012, the U.S. Department of Labor implemented, in coordination with the U.S. Department of Education, the Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career Training (TRADE) initiative, providing $500 million in grants to community colleges and universities for development and expansion of innovative training programs.

Daytona State received nearly $850,000 as part of a consortium of 12 Florida colleges awarded a $15 million grant, and has created a multi-step training process focused on the region’s workers and industry needs.

The program’s staff and instructors will provide information and be available to answer questions during the information sessions. The next series of classes is scheduled to start Sept. 14.

For more information, call Dean Howe, Florida TRADE Program coordinator, (386) 506-3379.
